Nintendo, for example, uses a three wire serial interface. With these controllers an adaptor could be provided to use them over USB. This seems to be the way to go; USB hubs seem to be getting cheaper. One indicator would be the fact that the chips for a four-node USB hub can be bought for about $4.00, without buying in bulk.
